Empirical Software Engineering
The University of Alabama REU in Empirical Software Engineering (REU-ESE) is housed in the Department of Computer Science. This program spans nine weeks and offers opportunities for 10 students from UA and other institutions across the nation.
Available research projects share the theme of empirical software engineering and span several exciting areas of inquiry, including text retrieval based feature location, code clone evolution, software engineering techniques and tools for computational science and engineering, and open-source developer communities.
REU-ESE participants will conduct empirical studies. That is, they first will use observation to collect and analyze data and experience and then will synthesize that data to discover, characterize, and evaluate relationships between software development artifacts, techniques, and tools.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicant must:
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or its possessions
- Be otherwise unemployed, or in an inactive status in any position held, during the nine-week program
- Be and remain an undergraduate student in good standing
- Plan to complete a degree program

Participant will:
- Contribute to an ongoing research project through collaboration with faculty members, graduate students, and other undergraduate students
- Take part in a professional development program designed to foster research and technical communication skills through training, practice, and experience and to encourage pursuit of graduate studies
- Interact with students, academics, and practitioners in a number of settings, ranging from informal meetings to a professional conference
Financial Support
Participant will receive:
- Stipend of $4,500
- Travel stipend of up to $600
- Housing in an apartment-style dorm on the UA campus
- Meal allowance
- Professional conference registration, travel, lodging, and meals
- Field trip travel, lodging, and meals
- Books and other supplementary materials
Requirements
Participant must:
- Commit at least 40 hours per week to REU-ESE activities
- Attend semiweekly cohort meetings and lab meetings
- Attend semiweekly professional development workshops or research seminars
- Attend biweekly field trips or social events
- Design and maintain a web page about his/her project and experience
- Prepare and deliver an oral presentation
- Prepare and submit a publishable research poster or paper
- Complete surveys and participate in focus groups and interviews regarding perceptions of and personal experiences in the program
- Deliver the oral presentation at his/her home institution
